Somerset County League Premier Division - Cheddar 3 Castle Cary 2
- A game of two halves. Cheddar showing some class in the first half with Cary still in the changing rooms. Second half a different game with Cary bossing the game with grit and determination and Cheddar not able to find their first half passing performance.
Cary's line up: Stewart,Taylor,Robinson,Smith,Scriven,Mitchell,Warren,T Pike,Case,Hayhoe,Wilton with Price,B Pike and Ferrett on the bench.
The first half kicked off and Cheddar started briskly and were soon in control and scored in less than 3 minutes with their forward getting in a free header!!! 1-0 down we were spectators! The next 20 minutes were painful,we were still in the changing rooms and huffing and puffing but achieving nothing. Cheddar were moving the ball around at pace , always giving each other options and winning the ball back if they lost it. They were first to everything and we were not good enough. On twenty minutes slack marking at a corner and its 2-0. Then a good moment when Smith got forward at a corner and his header was tipped over the bar. Almost straightaway Cheddar ran up the other end and after we failed to clear our lines they got another . 23 minutes gone and 3-0 down. At least we were stuffing the Aussies at the Oval. Merv's merit marks were not looking good today boys! Just before half time Ferrett came on for Wilton . Cheddar could have gone further ahead but Stewart pulled off a magnificent save from a fierce shot which he tipped onto the bar. Half Time 3-0 down and trooping off the pitch with our tails between our legs.
I don't know what they put in the tea at half time down Cheddar way but it seems to have an effect. Cheddar's second half performance was ordinary and we were a completely different side who battled away and definitely got back into the game. It wasn't pretty at times but gradually we took control and started playing football. 3 minutes into the half Ferrett broke away from the defence and scored from a narrow angle. 3-1 . 5 minutes later Hayhoe headed over but made up for the miss 15 minutes later with a cheeky lob over the keeper when he ran from his own half onto a long ball from the back. On came Price and B Pike shortly after that . For the last 10 minutes we creeted a few chances and Case had a golden opportunity in the final minute to equalise but blasted over the bar.
Full Time 2-3.
Summary - A very poor performance in the first half against a side that will probably do very well in their games this season - Second half saw much improvement but we need consistency and concentration right from the kick off if we are to do well this season.
