7th March Ilminster 0 Castle Cary 3
Today, we travelled to Ilminster looking for a win to keep us in the hunt for the division 2 title. With no Collings or Bond in goal today, Bolton agreed to put on the gloves. We started with a 4 5 1 formation to help protect the keeper. This was all a bit different to the boys and we never really settled with the formation although it did prevent Ilminster giving us any problems. We had chances ourselves from Frapple, Owen, Henderson and Weaving in the first half. Half time we came in 0-0.
Second half I suppose going back to 4 4 2 and telling the boys to play their usual game done the trick. Within minutes of the restart Moon threaded a ball through to Howell who rounded 2 defenders inside the box and drilled the ball into the bottom corner to put us 0-1 up on his debut. This settled us all down and we had a number of chances before Owen raced down the right hand side, crossed for Frapple to finish. 0-2. Ilminster continued to have 1 or 2 chances with Bolton making some good saves and last gasp tackles from Paul and Barnes helped keep them at bay.
With Payne coming off the bench and going up front and causing his normal problems he found himself with the ball at his feet and getting himself in the box before being brought down by two players. Penalty. He picked the ball up himself and scored from the spot luckily missing the keeper otherwise he probably would have been blown through the net. 0-3. Chances came and went after this with Moon, Howell, Weaving, Frapple and Owen all going close again.
Full time. 0-3
14th February - Parcroft 1 Cary 3
This with out doubt was probably our hardest game of the season. We weren’t allowed to play our normal passing game, which at times was frustrating for the players. They learnt that sometimes you have to dig out a result, and this is what we did today.
We kicked off, on a soggy pitch, and the first half was a story of trying to break down a very stubborn Parcroft, and when we did Frapple twice, Weaving, and Owen all missed one on one with the keeper. We lived to regret this as on 23 minutes a complete misunderstanding between Bolton, and Bond allowed Parcroft to score, 1-0.
We huffed and we puffed, and so did Parcroft, but on 28 minutes Weaving burst his way through the midfield, and at long last, beat the keeper, with a screaming shot, 1-1. The only other chance in the first half, was Moon going close with a header.
We just said to the boys at half time, that we had to be patient, and just try and get a result, and we felt that we could get that. The second half was very much like the first, with again Frapple, Weaving and Owen, all missing glorious chances, whilst at the other end, Barnes, Lewis, Bolton, and Paul all had to defend very well, and Bond had some important saves to make. Finally, with 20 minutes gone, a superb pass from Paul to Weaving, who again went on one of his runs, to slot the ball past the keeper 1 -2.
Parcroft didn’t lie down, and kept coming at us, and we didn’t look relaxed, until Owen shot, which at first looked like the keeper had made a fantastic save, only for their linesman to say it had crossed the line, and we finished the game winning 1-3.
A hard battle today, full credit to Parcroft, but today boys you learnt how sometimes it is the result that counts more. Three games left, you know what you have got to do, believe in yourselves and you’ll achieve it.
7th February - Castle Cary 10 Perry Street 1
When we played Perry Street away we beat them 0-14 and we just hoped today that the boys didn’t think this was going to be an easy ride. The game started brightly with an early shot from Owen that went just wide. From the goal kick the ball went straight to Frapple who took a touch and picked his spot in the bottom right hand corner, 1-0. This was the start of things to come with Weaving forcing saves from the keeper on 8 and 9 minutes. On 12 minutes Payne won the ball in midfield and put a pass through to Frapple who from just outside the box shot and the ball went in off the post, 2-0. On 14 minutes Payne collected a pass from Gurung and struck a shot from 20 yards that went in off the left hand post, 3-0. Number 4 started from the back with Hicks put Collings away down the left hand side whose cross was met by Owen which was saved by the keeper and tapped in by Frapple, 4-0.
Perry Street did have a couple of half chances but Hicks, Barnes, Bolton and Lewis all defended well and protected Bond in goal. On 32 minutes it was Owen that picked up a long clearance and threaded a pass through to Frapple who again put the ball in the right hand corner, 5-0. 5 minutes later it was this partnership again with Owens shot slashing against the bar and Frapple heading in the rebound.
Half time 6-0.
Second Half
The second half started with a wake up call with Perry Street breaking away straight from kick off and the young lad beating two defenders and giving Bond no chance, 6-1. This didn’t stop us though and twelve minutes in a pass from Lewis found Frapple who played Weaving through who made no mistake, 7-1. Number 8 came from a cross from Henderson that found Owen on the edge of the box who struck a sweet shot, 8-1. Owen also got number 9 when he broke away and found himself with just the keeper to beat. He coolly rounded him and slotted the ball home, 9-1. Our last goal today involved a pass from Gill to Moon whose diagonally pass found Collings who burst into the box and finished in the bottom left hand corner to make it 10-1.
An excellent performance today, well done everyone.
Massive performance from everyone today which it had to be, and will have to be next week when we welcome second place Merriott to Cary.
CASTLE CARY 9 ASH 2
I do apologise if this is brief. The score line rather flatters itself, as it wasn’t a brilliant display by us. Then again, its three more points. Goal scorers today were, Owen, Collings, Owen, Collings, Frapple, Owen, Weaving, Frapple, and Collings. Well done to every body for a good performance.
CASTLE CARY 13 PENMILL 0
After a long break due to Christmas, frozen pitches and snow, we finally got to play a game of football on a beautiful sunny day. Before we kicked off, during our pregame chat, we spent five minutes, beating the drum about how important it was, to get straight back in after such a long break. For us this seemed to work.
We started very well, playing some fast flowing football, and on six minutes Paul and Frapple combined to put Owen through, first goal. Penmill broke straight from the restart, and a shot from the left-hand side of the box, forced Bond to make a superb one handed save and push it wide of the goal. From the resulting corner Frapple picked the ball up in his own box, took it to the half way line, put Collings away, who crossed the ball for Frapple to finish in the bottom corner, second goal.
It all went quiet then for 10 minutes, with Penmill having a few chances, and Bond having to be on his toes and making three or four decent saves, along with some good defending from Barnes, Bolton, Hicks, and Gill. On 26 minutes, Collings again supplied a cross and this time, Henderson coolly finished, third goal.
Two minutes later, Parham took a quick throw-in to Owen, who found Frapple on the edge of the box, who scored using his left foot, fourth goal.
Half time.
The second half started as we finished the first, with another quick throw-in from Parham again to Owen. This time he found Collings, who finished with a tap in, fifth goal. Number six came from a five man move, starting with Parham, with Paul, Owen and Frapple all getting involved, and neatly finished by Weaving, sixth goal. Penmill did try to get back at us, but Barnes, Parham, Bolton, and Graham, stayed strong, and worked well together to keep them out.
The next goal came from a long ball played from the back, which was picked up by Weaving, and finished again by Owen, seventh goal. With Paul causing havoc down the right-hand side, and producing a number of crosses, it was one of these picked up by Owen, who shot, it was saved, Payne got on the rebound, took it past the keeper, and coolly slotted it home, eighth goal.
A minute later, Payne was unlucky on a first time shot, which struck the post. Collings was put away down the left-hand side, cut into the box, and put the ball over the keepers head, ninth goal. Penmill still caused us one or two problems down the left-hand side, but Graham was on his toes, and defended really well on all occasions.
Number ten was a beauty, Payne picked the ball up in midfield, with a simple through ball to Owen, who just took his time, rounded the keeper and rolled the ball over the line, to get his hat trick, and our tenth goal. The next goal came from Collings breaking down the left, getting inside the box, rounding a Penmill defender, and putting the ball into the path of Frapple, who slotted it home, eleventh goal.
Two minutes later, Hicks picked the ball up in midfield, found Frapple on the edge of the box, who turned and volleyed it against the post and in, his fourth goal, and our twelfth. Our final goal, came from the left hand side again, and it was Collings who caused all sorts of problems, and broke away to put the ball across the keeper, his hat trick and our thirteenth and final goal.
An excellent display from all fourteen players today, and I couldn’t have asked for any more after such a long break. Another break next week, so hopefully a repeat performance in two weeks against Ilminster!!
November 15th Ash 0 Castle Cary 4
Today we travelled to Long Sutton to play Ash. For the second week running we started slow and at times looked like strangers. On ten minutes we put a move together which saw a shot blocked by the ash defence only to fall to Collings who looped the ball back in to the box for Paul to head in to the back of the net 0-1.
Ten minutes later Moon had a shot from well outside the box well saved by the keeper. Soon after this, confusion between our defence and Bond nearly cost us a goal but Bolton was there to clear the danger. On twenty minutes Barnes found Paul on the right who sent Weaving away beating three players before his shot hit the post. All of a sudden we looked more settled then we had to make a change with Parham who was playing well at left back having to be replaced by Graham.
Just before half time Frapple put Collings in with a pass from just inside his own half and his cross was met by Owen to make it 0-2. This made up for the one he missed from three yards minutes earlier.
Second half we started better, although Ash had one or two chances, we dealt with the threat very well with Barnes, Bolton, Hicks and Graham holding firm and all putting in last gasp tackles.
Our third goal came when Henderson found Moon who put Owen through to score 0-3. Two minutes later it was Barnes who put Henderson away who’s cross found Frapple who hit the crossbar with his shot. It was Frapple again whose shot hit the crossbar only to rebound for Payne to head home 0-4.
Well done again everybody today especially to Paul, Graham, Parham, Bolton, and Barnes who put in a great captains performance in the second half.
November 8th Penmill Pilgrims 0 Castle Cary 4
Our latest league game saw us travel to Penmill. On a very wet heavy pitch, the first half was probably best described as forgettable. Both teams didn’t get started, and it wasn’t pretty to watch. Thank goodness for half time.
After sitting down and sorting a few things out, and just telling the boys to play football. Six minutes in this seemed to pay off. Collings broke away down the left hand side, finding himself just inside the box, and got the shot away just wide. Two minutes later, a ball from the midfield put Frapple through, whose shot was saved by the keeper, but he put the rebound in 0-1. This gave us the confidence and our passing football was back, with Payne, Owen, and Weaving, all going close.
Payne Owen and Frapple combined to put Collings through, who neatly finished 0-2.
A ball played out from the back by Paul, sent Owen on his way, who crossed from the right, for Frapple to head home 0-3.
Our fourth goal came from a cross from Henderson, picked up by Frapple, who put Collings in to score 0-4.
Penmill had a couple of one on ones both dealt with brilliantly by Bond.
Well done everyone today, see you next week away to Ash.
October 25th CASTLE CARY 9 TEMPLECOMBE 2
On a sunny Sunday morning, we welcomed Templecombe who are currently top the league, in a game that would put us second in the league. We couldn’t have got off to a worse start when after 3 minutes we were caught square, and Templecombe took the lead. As soon as this happened we found our stride and on 8 minutes Weaving crossed to Owen who shot first time and hit the bar.
In the mean time Templecombe had a shot wide, and an in swinging corner which beat every one apart from Bolton who cleared it off the line. On 17 minutes Parham played a sweet ball to Collings, who put Owen through who neatly finished equalising.
This got our heads up, with Owen going close again, before Moon and Owen combined to put Frapple through who finished and we were in the lead. We continued to create chances with Weaving and Owen both hitting the post from distance. On the half hour it was Moon again, this time putting Collings through who shot across the keeper into the top corner 3-1.
With Bond doing a good job in goal, it was a long clearance that looked a lost cause, but Paul didn’t give up and managed to get a cross in for Collings to finish 4-1
Second half
We talked about that it didn’t matter who scored and the assists were just as important, and it was Moon for the third time that put Collings through again to calmly lob the keeper 5-1. Shortly after this we forces a corner from the right hand side swung in by moon and headed in by Frapple 6-1.
All this pressure put Templecombe still had a couple chances and one which saw bond make a save at the near post. Number 7 came when Parham put Collings away down the left hand side who crossed the ball, Payne got a head on it and put Frapple through to make it 7-1.
With Moon and Weaving both going close with long range shots, before Payne picked up the ball just inside of Templecombe half, and struck a thunderous shot into the top left-hand corner to make it 8-1. Soon after this we got caught, Templecombe broke to make it 8-2.
With Lewis making his debut, he managed to squeeze the ball through to Frapple who lobbed the keeper from distance to make the final score 9-2.
Everyone was absolutely fantastic today, with the back four of Barnes, Bolton, Parham and Hicks outstanding. Well done to you all, enjoy the break!!
11th October CASTLE CARY 0 ILCHESTER YOUTH 7 (County Cup)
Today, we were given a footballing lesson, by a side who over the last three seasons have picked up a number of trophies.
From the word go, Ilchester come straight at us, and we found ourselves one/nil down in the first minute, from a shot and a wicked deflection giving Bond no chance. We held on for twenty minutes, with Collings and Frapple, both having half chances, and on the other side of the coin Moon, making a last ditch tackle in our box, to prevent Ilchester from scoring. On twenty seven minutes a mistake saw us put the ball back into the middle instead of clearing our lines, and gifted Ilchester a goal two/nil. A minute later an Ilchester lad picked up the ball went past four of our boys laid it off, for the striker to shot three/nil. Ilchester began to run riot now, and two minutes later it became four/nil.
The second half didn’t see any change; twelve minutes in Ilchester made it five/nil. Two minutes after this a sweet ball from Moon found Frapple, who put Collings in but he couldn’t finish. As the half went on, we began to play a little football, but nothing was going our way, and a mistake at the back saw a fantastic save from Bond, and unfortunately for us, Ilchester got on the rebound to make it six/nil. Probably our best chance of the game came late, which saw Moon, play the ball to Frapple, who shot, saved by the keeper, only for Collings to have a go, which was saved by the keeper, and we all thought Payne would tuck it away, and would you believe it the keeper saved again.
Late in the game, Ilchester broke away and made it seven/nil.
All a bit disappointing today, second leg of the league cup next week, away to Avishayes, hopefully we can improve on today. Well done to Moon, Paul, Barnes, and Gill today.
4th October Perry Street 0 Castle Cary 14
It’s always nice to get your long trips out of the way and when you perform like we did today they seem that much shorter. The first couple of minutes we looked all over the place but then out of nothing Weaving collected the ball in midfield, passed it wide to Owen, who’s cross was met by Collings, who slotted it home 0-1. From here on we were on fire. Moon put Henderson through whose cross was put away by Frapple only to be ruled offside.
Two minutes later, Frapple was at it again, meeting Owen’s cross on the volley, only for the keeper to make the save. A free kick just inside our own half taken by Bolton, collected by Owen, who provided yet another cross for Collings to make it 0 -2. Perry Street had a couple of chances, one being a mistake by Bolton, and the opposition having a shot which bounced just in front of Bond who did very well to keep it out.
It was our turn again, Henderson providing a cross met by Weaving to be placed inches over the bar. Midway through the first half, Collings got on the end of yet another cross to get his hat trick 0-3. With the boys playing well, and passing the ball a three man move, saw Moon, pass to Henderson, and yet another cross this time met by Frapple to make it 0-4.
By this time I was running out of paper, when Weaving picked the ball up in the centre of midfield and kept going until he arrived in the box, and beat the keeper at the near post 0-5. With Graham and Payne coming on for Henderson and Collings, they both took to it like ducks to water, and before long Payne got on to a cross from Owen, and a neat header into the top corner 0-6. Two minutes later the same combination worked again, only this time the header went wide. Perry Street made a rare break, and a one on one situation with the keeper, the lad got the shot away only for Bond to make a fantastic one handed save.
The second half continued much like the first with Graham putting the ball in to Owen 0-7. With Frapple switching to right hand side of midfield this seemed to cause Perry Street lots of problems, and it wasn’t long before a cross was met by Owen, only for the keeper to produce a great one-handed save. Goal 8 came from good work down the left hand side from Graham and Payne, with the ball eventually ending with Weaving with his back to goal, who turned his man, and put the ball into the top corner 0-8.
Frapple went down the right, beat two men, and got himself into the box, struck a shot, which hit the post, for Owen to shoot, the keeper save and Payne tapped it in 0-9.
Our tenth goal came from a pass from Frapple to Owen, who then scored to make it 0-10. Collings then found himself in the box, back to goal, looked up and put Frapple in who slotted it past the keeper 0-11. Goal 12 started from the back, with the ball being played out by Bolton, who passed to Weaving, who spread it wide to Henderson, and yet another cross for Owen, to finish 0-12.
Good work from Payne, who managed to squeeze the ball to Collings, who ran through on goal, to make it 0-13. The final goal came from Weaving, who ran through and went past two men and then shot with the ball ending up in the bottom corner 0-14.
Everyone played a massive part today, and even if you didn’t get a mention above, your contribution to the game assisted all of the others with their scoring roles. Feet on the ground for next week Ilchester in the cup (I’ll bring a note book rather than my usual piece of paper!!)
September 20th Castle Cary 2 Parcroft 0
On a lovely Sunday afternoon, and having to play on the seniors pitch, we again started the game brightly. We had a couple of half chances in the first two minutes, and then forced a corner. Collings took it short to Owen, who crossed the ball for Henderson to head past the keeper, to make it one nil on four minutes.
Was this the start of better things to come, well it should have been, as chance after chance went begging. Bond in our own goal had little more to do than stand and watch. The best of our chances came on fifteen minutes, when Frapple dropped deep to pick up the ball, and put Owen through, only for him to shoot wide. Another corner caused problems, delivered by Owen, with a glancing header by Frapple saved by the keeper, only for Weaving to put the rebound over the bar.
The second half started very much the same, with Payne going close early one with a shot. The only thing that did change in the second half was that Bond had a little more to do, all be it mostly back passes. Tem minutes in Weaving picked the ball up in the centre of midfield, played it left to Collings, who went down the line to cross a fantastic ball in for Frapple to tap in, two nil.
A rare mistake at the back from Bolton saw Parcroft one on one with Bond, only for their lad to shoot wide. Late on in the game, Owen had a goal ruled out for off side. Final score two nil. Good performances all round today, especially Parham and Payne, who both came on as subs, and played a big part.
First leg of the League cup next week, against Avishayes at home.
September 13th Merriott Battlers 3 Castle Cary 2
After our cup game being cancelled, we had to revert to our league fixture at Merriott, with a 3.30pm kick off.
We started the first half brightly, playing some nice pass and move football. After 10 minutes a three man move, was ended with a turn in the box from Owen, who put the ball into the bottom corner to make it one nil.
Merriott didn’t cause us many problems, and what Bond had to deal with he did well. We continued to push, and from clearing a corner, headed out by Collings. The ball was pushed to the right to Henderson who put it into the path of Frapple, who struck the shot first time, only for the keeper to make a brilliant save. More chances fell to Owen, Payne, Frapple, and Henderson all again dealt with by the keeper. It wasn’t long again before we caught Merriott on the break, and Collings was put through, who put the ball into the top corner, to make it two nil.
Right on half time we got caught and pushed too far forward. Merriott broke, and scored to make it two one at half time.
Second half totally different, all play coming from Merriott, and it was chance after chance, and unfortunately for us they took two of them. A disappointing second half display but we have to move on and hopefully turn things around next week home to Parcroft.
September 6th TEMPLECOMBE 2 CASTLE CARY 2
Our first game of the season saw us away to Templecombe, playing on a pitch with very long grass, which didn’t help either side. After a slow start, and going a goal down, we fought back to go two-one up with goals from Paul and Payne. Templecombe then grabbed an equaliser half way through the second half.
Well done everyone, especially Bolton, Hicks and Barnes, all outstanding today.
Away to Merriott next Sunday , County Cup game cancelled - bye into next round.
