Stoke Youth 0- Castle Cary 9                       Sunday 2nd March 2008

With a change we were at Stoke for an away game this Sunday and following the familiar start the lads settled into the match after Matt Morley (15) carried out a good pass and move down the right side to collect and slot in his first. This was quickly followed by a corner which was curled in by Andy Middleton and headed on target by Matt Morley (19) who finished the rebounded ball. To round off his efforts Matt Morley (24) carried out a strong individual run at their defence finishing low in the corner to complete his hat trick. There was an outstanding show of great football when Tom Dewdney slipped a good pass through to Andy McCourt (30) who just had the keeper to beat. A fee kick was awarded just outside the box and Charlie Elsworth (35) curled one of his magic shots around the wall before the break.

The second half seen a few positional changes and it wasn’t long to wait before Andy Middleton fired one in to bounce off the bar onto the head of Liam Rushton (50) to finish. With total dominance the Cary lads continued to seek more goals when another corner by Callum Chainey was collected by Joe Allen (70) who nudged the ball in from close range. Following a well deserved rest on the bench for a while seen Dom Palmer (78) come on and score a beautiful goal into the side netting having collected a pass from Liam Rushton. Harry Rogers fired in a late shot at goal where Dom Palmer (80) was waiting for the rebound scoring into the roof of the goal area.

Good away win. Well done all the team and the MoTM was awarded to Charlie Elsworth for his continuous efforts in ball possession, passing and of course scoring.

Thanks once again to Mark Morley for running the line.

Castle Cary 5 - Merriott A 0                                    Sunday 24th February 2008

This match saw us home again to another of the Merriott teams and following a slow start, the lads settled well into the game.  A pressure run at their defence from Matt Morley followed by a shot from Dom Palmer saw the first goal unfortunately knocked in by their keeper after 16 minutes. This inspired the lads for more and once again Matt Morley (35) made one of his menacing runs at their defence, scoring after a great individual effort. This was shortly followed by another move assisted by Ciaran Gray and finished by Matt Morley (38). There were some outstanding saves from Callum Vowles who also kept the spirits high amongst the rest of the team. Following the interval and now playing uphill, the lads continued to dominate the game resulting in Jason Wilkins firing in a high cross from the left field to be controlled and finished by none other than Matt Morley (50) to complete his hat trick for the day. As if to add to the punishment, Liam Rushton (78) collected the ball from about 30 metres out and fired one high into the top of the net which must be a contender for goal of the season so far. The guests continued to the final whistle but Callum Vowles kept them at bay and was awarded MoTM for his efforts. Well done lads, another three to chalk up.

Many thanks to Mark Morley for refereeing and Steve Wilton for running the line.

Cary  13 - Merriott Mavericks 0          Sunday 17th February 2008

Sundays game seen us at home again against Merriott Mavericks with the two Yeovil lads still absent. However spirits were high and it only took a few minutes before the opener was created from a corner which was finished at the near post by Dom Palmer(9). This was quickly followed by a strong run by Matt Morley passing to Dom Palmer (10) who had an open goal. Matt Morley made another run down the right wing, crossing into the box which was volleyed by Ciaran Gray (23) for his first of the season. Dom continued the pressure by chipping in from the right allowing Matt Morley (25) to run in his first of the game. This pair’s partnership continued with Dom showboating then passing to Matt Morley (27) to finish. After the break the lads continued to keep scoring when new signing Tom Dewdney (41) got on the score sheet with a scrape in the box. Looking for some of the action Joe Allen (53) stepped up from defence to walk in his first. To round off his hat-trick Matt Morley (54) carried out an individual run finishing low. A break from their own half seen Joe Allen (58) smash home another after some superb passing. Sensing his own hat-trick Joe Allen (65) picked up a loose ball and slotted in his third. With a few positional changes Jordan Wilton (67) found himself on the edge of the box where he fired in one low in the back of the net. Dom Palmer (71) polished off his own hat-trick with a lovely individual run. Matt made another run at the defence finding Liam Rushton (80) to score the last goal of the game at full time. Well done lads with plenty of goals which may count at the end of the season for the league position.

MoTM went to Matt Morley for not only his hat-trick but for many assisted goals.

Thanks once again to ref Trevor Messenger and linesman Mark Morley.

Castle Cary 1- Ilminster 0                                   Sunday 27th January 2008

This game seen us back again on home turf at Donald Pither. Following the kick off the game settled down with the majority of play in the visitors half as Cary dominated possession.  There were a few early chances but to no avail until Callum Chainey took a shot from the edge of the box where one of their defenders made a weak clearance and was picked up by Liam Rushton (14) who walked the goal in. This was followed a series of chances which unfortunately did not finish in the net. After the break and with a few more changes Cary continued to take control although Ilminster sensed that they were capable of getting the equaliser. This was one of those games that was not meant to be a high scorer, as yet again chances to increase the score line were not taken and the game ended at 1-0.

As the back four carried out some superb defending keeping the visitors from breaking through MoTM went to Joe Allen for his control of the game.

Well done lads three more points to add to the tally but we all need to start upping our game for the next match.

Castle Cary  7 Stoke United 1                                              20th January 2008

This home game took us to Queen Camel due to the Cary pitch being too wet to play on against Stoke United. Following the kick off the game settled into a steady rhythm but pressure on the visitors forced them into a hand ball just outside the box. Up stepped Charlie Elsworth (20) to curl the ball round the wall low into the corner of the goal. This settled the lads further and Liam Rushton (30) nudged in a second from 2 metres. Having briefed him to remember to pass, Dom Palmer (38) made one of his famous Mancunian runs and chipped in a goal with the outside of his boot which was sweet as a nut. The visitors made a fast break and got one back just before half time. Following the interval the lads got stuck in again and a shot was fired in and hit the post where Liam Rushton (42) collected the rebound scoring his second. Matt Morley (52) carried out one of his menacing runs at the defence placing the ball in the corner of the net. It would be fair to say that this appeared to be our lot until Liam Rushton (75) decided there was time for more goals by running in his third of the day. To add to our score line,  Dom Palmer (78) made an individual run at goal, scrambling the ball free to walk in his second.

Well done to all the squad; another 3 points and back in the driving seat.
A good hat-trick scored by Liam Rushton together with some great football for the crowd to watch. Due to the unavailability of our regular keeper Jordan Wilton stepped up and volunteered to go in goal maintaining a low score against us. He was awarded MOTM.

Thanks to Mark Morley for refereeing and Steve Wilton for running the line.
A special thank you to Tom Singer from the under 14’s, helping out due to our shortfall in numbers.

6th January 2008

Castle Cary Rangers 0 -Lyde United 3

This was always going to be the biggest game of the season attracting quite a large crowd and with a break of three weeks together with pre-match nerves the game got under way at Maggs Lane. For the first ten minutes both teams were evenly matched but an unfortunate error gave the visitors their first after 11 minutes. The game settled for a spell with some good football being played and a few attempts on goal but Lyde scored another following a fast break.  Heads were down following this and a half time talk attempted to lift the spirits of the side. Lyde caught us out again shortly after the break scoring their third. Cary lads continued to battle on and came back into the game with some serious shots at goal but some days it is just not meant to go in. With the full time whistle it was clear to all the team that they did not play to their fullest potential but MoTM went to Joe Allen for some outstanding defending keeping the score at three. Never mind lads put this behind us and pick up your game for the next match.

Thanks to Steve Wilton for the nets and marking out the pitch together with Mark Morley for running the line and Trevor Messenger for refereeing.

16th December 2007

Wincanton 3 - Castle Cary  6

With a break of three weeks due to the bad weather the lads were itching to get back on the pitch for a game. Following the kick off both teams appeared to be evenly matched but it was not long before Matt Morley made one of his attacking runs to shoot and Liam Rushton (8) collected the rebound for the first goal of the game. Settling down Cary took command and Dom Palmer (13) chipped in a left footer from the edge of the box which must go down as the cheekiest of goals this season so far. Some good domination showed in the midfield by Cary and following a scrap in the box Liam Rushton (29) nudged in his second goal. Wincanton fought back and pulled one back before the break. Following the interval Harry Rogers provided a lovely ball to Dom Palmer (45) who tapped in with ease.

The home side pulled back another goal but this was met with even more determination by the Cary lads and again Harry Rogers triangulated the perfect pass for Matt Morley (60) to run onto and beat the keeper. Without any easing off Cary maintain the pressure and Liam Rushton (62) chipped a shot which the keeper found impossible to control providing him with yet another hat-trick this season. Callum Vowles made a superb save over the top of his goal.  Wincanton Town carried on their attack gaining a third which was too late for the final score line.

A hard fought game and although he did not score MOTM went to Harry Rogers for an outstanding performance setting up two of the goals. Great finish for 2007, now top of the league. Some hard fixtures ahead in the New Year.

Castle Cary 5 - Gillingham 1       25 November

Sunday brought us home again with much improved weather from the previous week. With the team at full strength again the game got under way. Once again Cary seemed a while to settle and Gillingham took the advantage by scoring after 14 minutes. This seemed to wake the lads up and a free kick was awarded just outside the box. Callum Chainey (15) placed the ball and curled the ball into the keeper who could not control, and went in. This was the break that was needed and assistance once again from Callum Chainey put the goal king Liam Rushton (23)  through who placed the ball in around the keeper. Constant pressure from our defence enabled Joe Allen to send Dom Palmer (28) away who finished with perfection. After the break Cary once again dominated the majority of play and Callum Chainey (45) chipped in from the edge of the box to score his second of the game. A good ball through from the midfield allowed Matt Morley (48) to lob the keeper who had committed his run. A good game for all players, especially Joe Gore who maintained his stance in defence and was awarded man of the match. Well done, another three points.

Castle Cary 10 - Stoke Youth 2

Sunday brought us home again against Stoke Youth with a full strength squad. Following the start Cary settled well and due to a mix up in the opponents defence provided Liam Rushton (7) with an early goal. Shortly after that Matt Morley (10) carried out an individual run placing home his first of the game. The away side made a fast break catching out the defence and scored their first.  The match was mainly all in one half when Matt Morley (22) replicated his first with another strong run. Andrew Middleton (23) fired in another to be saved by the keeper to which he followed up and scored. Carrying on the goal rush Matt Morley (28) struck his hat-trick by a superb volley of a cleared header. Not content with three Matt Morley (30) made a run at the defence and slotted in his forth. Cary continued to dominate and following a clearance, Charlie Elsworth (39) picked up the ball on the edge of the box and fired in a peach of a goal in the top right corner. The frenzy continued with Liam Rushton (40) driving another low to the inside of the post making the score line at the break 8-1. Changes were made for the second half testing out Jordan Wilton as reserve keeper allowing Callum Vowles to stretch his legs but  Cary seemed to sit back and cruise which gave the visitors another opportunity to score another. Lifting their game again Cary applied more pressure and Andrew Middleton (64) carried out a nice move with Dom Palmer and placed in his second. The final goal came from a lovely move from Charlie Elsworth to Dom Palmer who finished off the score line in double figures. Well done all of you.A good amount of goals and three more points.

Thanks again to Mark Morley for running the line

Stoke Utd. 2  Castle Cary 8

Sunday’s away game took us to Stoke Utd. with the squad up to full strength for the first time this season. Following the kick off Cary appeared to not to settle for the first ten minutes until a move from the left provided Liam Rushton (14) with the first goal.
Andrew McCourt (31) pushed home another following a scrap in the box. After the break Cary seemed to take charge of the game and following a cross from Jason Wilkins, the keeper was lobbed by Matt Morley(55). The midfield maintained pressure throughout with a good link up between Harry Rogers and Dom Palmer(70) who smashed in another. Matt Morley then carried out a good run at the defence passing to Liam Rushton (75) who placed in his second of the game. The goal frenzy continued with Andrew Middleton(76) scoring a beauty of the crossbar. A few changes were carried out which let Stoke carry out two counter attacks scoring each time. Harry Rogers took a shot on goal for the keeper to parry which was followed up by Jordan Wilton (79) to place in. Another strong run came from Matt Morley into the edge of the box and crossed in to Harry Rogers (80) who placed in the bottom right hand corner to complete the score line. An enjoyable game, producing some good flowing football. Well done, another three points.

Merriott Mavericks 2 Castle Cary 6

Sunday took us away to Merriott for a morning match. A welcome return was made by Jason Wilkins playing his first game of the season due to injury. Following the warm up the lads appeared to be in the right frame of mind and within a few minutes they had scored when Liam Rushton (3) placed in an easy ball from the six yard line. Merriott fought back and scored from a set piece corner bringing the score level. However Rushton (12) was on fire making a strong run into the box and putting his second away. Dom Palmer made one of his spectacular moves to the right of goal and chipped in a cross to be met again by Rushton (18) to complete his hat-trick with a lovely header. Not content with the score Callum Chainey carried out a skilful run at the defence drawing their defenders and placed the ball to Rushton (20) who was unmarked who sent in another. A corner was granted and Chainey fired in another cross to be met by Rushton (38) who’s header was on target but parried by the keeper only to be met on the rebound with the boot of Rushton. Merriott fought back and scored just before the interval making the score 2-5.

Following the break the game quietened down with the only goal of the half from Rushton (55) who slid the ball past the keeper. In fairness to Merriott they never gave up the fight until the final whistle. Well done all. Another three point win. Man of the match had to go to Liam Rushton who could not stop scoring.

Sunday 7th October Ilminster 0 Castle Cary 1

Having regained a few players this week Cary were off to Ilminster. Shortly after the kick off Andrew McCourt (2) collected a deflection and placed in the only goal of the game. Cary dominated the remainder of the first with a solid defence. After the break Ilminster came back into the game a little more causing some nervous moves through the centre. With sound defending from Joe Allen and Harry Rogers together with good hands from Callum Vowles in goal, they were kept at bay. Another frustrating game for the Cary forwards  and the length of the grass did not help. They battled on to the final whistle and were rewarded with the three points. Well done. A hard game well fought.

Sunday 30th September Castle Cary 1  Ilchester 5

With a squad of 17 players only 11 were available for our first home game at the Donald Pither Memorial Ground. Because of this Tom Singer stepped up from the 14’s as substitute. Cary started off the first half but within ten minutes they were 2-0 down. With heads down they conceded another ten minutes later. Liam Rushton (35 min) managed to pull one back just before the break. Tom Singer came on for the second half and all credit to him, played very well in the midfield creating a few chances. Unfortunately the goal rush kept coming from Ilchester who score another two making the final score 1-5. This game was completely marred by the one of the opposing team players who was booked for time wasting. I have lodged a complaint with the League and requested an investigation into the behaviour of an Ilchester player. I would like to point out how proud I am of every Cary player for not retaliating in any way. You are all much better people for it.  We’ll put this one behind us and prepare for our next game. Thanks to Steve Wilton for running the line together with Helen and June for the refreshments.

Sunday 23rd September    Gillingham 1 Castle Cary 3

Our second game of the season took us to away to Gillingham still suffering a couple of injuries. The game started with Cary dominating the majority of the play but just not able to score. Following a cross from the right winger Gillingham struck with a header goal about 5 minutes before half time. Liam Rushton was closely marked by their central defender throughout the game never letting up any space. Following an encouraging half time talk Cary kicked off downhill and again seemed to take control of the game. A couple of substitutions were made and with constant pressure from Cary,  Dom Palmer placed in a ball from the edge of the box for Andrew McCourt (50 min) to slide it in on the goal line. This lifted the spirits even more followed by another ball placed into the Gillingham goal area for McCourt (55 min) again to nudge in off the post. With the game turned around Charlie Elsworth attempted to take the ball round the keeper only to be brought down in the box and a penalty was awarded.  Jordan Wilton (65 min pen) stepped up confidently to place the ball in the left hand corner to conclude the Cary goals at 3.

A frustrating game at times but with a great turn around. Three more points.

Well done. A thank you goes to Marcus Rushton for running the line.

Sunday 9th September 2007    Chard Town 0  Castle Cary 5

We travelled, probably our furthest distance, for the first game of the season to Chard Town, the previous season’s League Champions. We took 12 out of a squad of 17 due to injuries and unavailability, which included 3 new signings. With a nervous warm up at such a formidable venue the whistle was blown to be followed 20 seconds later with Cary’s first goal smacked in by Andrew McCourt (1 min). Celebrations replicated his debut goal last year against this team. Settling down the team maintained good defence and a busy midfield when new signing Matt Morley (10 min) struck for his debut goal for the club. New keeper Callum Vowles was kept busy during this half and demonstrated his abilities in goal. After the break Cary maintained pressure with Matt Morley and Liam Rushton punishing their defence with every opportunity. Newcomer Dom Palmer was taken down in the box and a penalty was awarded. Liam Rushton (60 min pen) stepped up to place home Cary’s third from the spot. With a bit of breathing space Cary maintained possession throughout the half allowing goal hungry Liam Rushton (70 min) to romp in another. Callum Chainey captained the side admirably maintaining their concentration. It was only a question of time before Matt Morley (75 min) made a strong run straight through their defence and around the keeper to slide in his 2nd of the game and Cary’s 5th.
A fantastic start to the season with all 12 lads working hard together as a team.
Man of the mach was all 12. Well done. Many thanks to Mark Morley for running the line
